Joseph Fisher
Joseph Fisher was held in the jail at Eureka on the evening of July 6, 1886, when a crowd gathered there. Constable W. T. Stanley testified that the crowd forced him to hand over the jail key, and that a mob then took Fisher from the jail and hanged him. A Salt Lake Herald correspondent wrote that Fisher may have been dead or shot before he was hoisted, and the accounts differ on whether the jailer resisted or handed over the keys. An inquest was held before Justice Lombard, and Fisher was buried at Silver City.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A mob took Joseph Fisher from the Eureka jail and hanged him; the constable says he was forced to hand over the key, while Salt Lake Herald correspondents say accounts differ on whether the jailer resisted or handed over the keys, and the Herald accounts say he may have been dead or shot before being hoisted.
Reported by: W T Stanley, Eureka constable; Salt Lake Herald correspondent (reporters); Justice Lombard inquest (court).
