Died in prison

Jose Jaramillo

52 years old · died July 4, 2016 · Cibola County Correctional Center, Cibola County, New Mexico

Jose Jaramillo worked for most of his life in the chili fields near Roswell and was the father of three. He was held at the Cibola County Correctional Center, a federal prison run by a private contractor, and in 2008 collapsed in his cell with a kidney infection, never regaining adequate brain function. His mother, Theodula Jaramillo, cared for him for years at a nursing home in Las Cruces, where he died on July 4, 2016. His family and their lawyers say untreated symptoms and diabetes went without proper care at the facility, and that staffing gaps and a missed vaccination contributed to his condition; the contractor has not answered detailed questions about the case, and the family later settled with the company without any admission of liability.

Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). His mother and the family's lawyers say untreated symptoms and missed care at the Cibola County Correctional Center, including diabetes going untreated, led to the kidney infection that caused his death, and the contractor has not answered detailed questions about the case.

Reported by: Theodula Jaramillo, his mother, and the family's lawyers (family or their lawyers); Attorney Lisa Curtis (family or their lawyers); migrant rights advocates.

Lawsuit: His family sued Corrections Corporation of America, the company that ran the Cibola County Correctional Center, and later settled without any admission of liability.
