José Ibarra Bucio
José Ibarra Bucio, 27, was held at the Adelanto ICE Processing Center in early February 2019, weeks after his son was born. His family describes him as a healthy, devoted husband and father and a former delivery driver. He collapsed the day after calling his wife and was taken to a hospital, where doctors told the family he had suffered a brain hemorrhage and fallen into a coma. ICE released him on humanitarian grounds on February 22, and after his family removed him from life support he died at Loma Linda on March 21, 2019. His family wants an investigation into his medical care, why ICE waited a day to tell them he was hospitalized, and why he was handcuffed to a bed.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (disputed; neglect alleged). The family says a brain hemorrhage caused his death and wants an investigation into his medical care, including why ICE waited a day to tell them he was hospitalized and why he was handcuffed to a bed, while the coroner did not investigate and ICE issued no death notice.
Reported by: his family; doctors at Loma Linda University Medical Center.
