Executed
José Gabriel
José Gabriel was hanged at San Quentin Prison on March 3, 1893, in what was the first judicial execution carried out by the State of California there, according to the record kept in the San Diego Superior Court. The San Diego Union's editorial page that week argued that only poor and friendless men were being sentenced to death for capital offenses, an objection to the fairness of capital punishment as applied. The state has not carried out an execution since 2006 and has since imposed a moratorium, the paper reported in 2023.
Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state
