His daughter, Annette Vallejo, said she misses his phone calls and his voice. Jose DeLeon was held at Coalinga State Hospital, and in his last call to her he said he was going to the medical unit for chest x-rays. In January 2020 he was taken to a hospital in Fresno, where he was diagnosed with pneumonia and sepsis, and he died after a cardiac arrest. His death certificate lists atherosclerotic heart disease as the cause of death. His family said he sounded well in a call only days earlier and that the hospital never explained the events that led to his hospitalization.
