José Chamults
José Chamults, 21, was held in the Santa Cruz jail in California. Early on May 3, 1877, a mob surrounded the jailer and under sheriff, broke open the jail yard door and obtained the jail keys, according to a San Francisco Post report reprinted in the New York Herald. The paper surmised that he was placed in a wagon, which was driven out from under him at the place of hanging, and that he was found hanged from a bridge that morning. The mob took him from the jail and killed him, and the report gives the jail keys as the only point at which the jailer and under sheriff gave way.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The San Francisco Post, as reprinted in the New York Herald, reports that a mob took Chamults from the Santa Cruz jail and hanged him from a bridge.
