Jory Linn Van Antwerp
Jory Linn Van Antwerp, 49, was held at the Hernando County Detention Center in Florida while receiving treatment for a serious illness. On June 14, 2024, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office, another person held in the jail's medical wing kicked him in the head as he lay in bed, and Tampa Bay 28 reported that staff examined him and believed he was fine. His condition worsened the following night, a scan showed a brain bleed, and he died at a hospital the next day. Sheriff Al Nienhuis said the medical examiner found the bleed from the attack, not his preexisting illness, caused the death, and that another person held at the jail has been charged in connection with it.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (neglect alleged). The sheriff's office says another detainee attacked Van Antwerp in the jail's medical unit, and the medical examiner found a brain bleed from the attack caused his death; staff examined him after the kick and believed he was fine, and the sheriff's office says the attack came without warning.
Reported by: Hernando County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him); Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis (the agency that held him); the medical examiner.
