Jordan

died June 1912 · Cordele jail, Dooly County, Georgia

Jennie Jordan was a Black woman from the Pinehurst area of Georgia, and friends from across the neighborhood came to her funeral, as she was one of the best-loved women there. She was held at the Cordele jail in June 1912 when a crowd of local men followed her there. According to the Atlanta Georgian, the sheriff and his few deputies resisted for a moment but were outnumbered, and the mob took her from the jail area to Pinehurst, where she was hanged from a tree and then shot. Her husband was at the point of collapse from grief and shock, and the New-York Tribune's garbled account of the Pinehurst jail does not clearly say how the mob got in or whether the jailer resisted.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Jennie Jordan from the Cordele jail, hanged her from a tree and shot her, according to the Atlanta Georgian; the sheriff and deputies resisted briefly but were outnumbered.

Reported by: Atlanta Georgian (reporters).
