Jones
A 1902 report in the Chicago Eagle says Jones, a Black man, was held in the county jail at Fort Smith, Arkansas. According to that account, the jailer, N. D. Knapton, shot him in the chest while other prisoners were trying to escape. Jones died about an hour later at the city hospital. The report describes the shooting as the jailer's response to the escape attempt, and this is the jail staff's account, not one that has been independently tested.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. Jailer N. D. Knapton shot Jones in the breast during an escape attempt by other prisoners, according to the jail's account reported in the article.
