Jonathan Velarde
Jonathan Velarde, 23, died on August 16, 2015, after a corrections officer shot him in the dining hall of the California Correctional Center in Susanville, where he was held. The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said he was attacking another prisoner with a weapon during a fight involving about 45 people, and that officers first used pepper spray and then fired warning shots before shooting him. The department called the shooting justified, and the death is under investigation by the state, which may refer it to the Lassen County district attorney's office.
