Johnny Allen Jr.

died December 1988 · Hamilton County Justice Center, Hamilton County, Ohio

Johnny Allen Jr. died in December 1988, about two weeks after he was beaten by another man held at the Hamilton County jail in Cincinnati. Investigators said the beating lasted about half an hour and classed his death as a homicide, and witnesses said it followed an earlier dispute over a TV channel. His mother, Helen L. Bonner, said she has forgiven the man who killed him, but that her forgiveness would never ease the pain of losing her son. That other man, Clarence Carter, was executed in Ohio in 2011.

Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody. Investigators said a fellow detainee, Clarence Carter, punched, choked, kicked and stomped on Johnny Allen Jr. for about half an hour in the Hamilton County jail, and witnesses said the beating followed an earlier dispute over a TV channel.

Reported by: Investigators (outside investigators); witnesses held at the Hamilton County jail (witnesses).
