Johnnie Roy Baston

37 years old · died March 10, 2011 · Southern Ohio Correctional Facility, Scioto County, Ohio

Johnnie Roy Baston was 37 when the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction executed him by lethal injection at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville on March 10, 2011, using pentobarbital alone, the first execution in the United States to do so. His church and friends petitioned for mercy, and his family asked the governor for clemency. His brothers said he was not the gunman and that the reported confession came during a polygraph test that was never completed, and his brother Richard said, "We'll clear his name." The department said he had confessed, a claim his family disputes. Before his death he asked his family to forgive him, asked that his children be told good things about him, and said he had wanted to better himself and encourage others.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His brothers said he maintained his innocence and that a reported confession came during a polygraph test that was never completed.
