John Winn
John Winn was being held in the Bourbon County jail at Paris, Kentucky, while awaiting action by the grand jury. On the night of April 27, 1881, a group of masked men entered the jail; the jailer first refused to give up the keys, but handed them over after his wife was threatened with the men's gunfire. The men went to Winn's cell, ordered him out, and shot him seven times when he did not come out, and a newspaper correspondent reported that he died within minutes. The account comes from a single 1881 newspaper report, which describes strong condemnation of the mob in the town.
