John Walker

died November 7, 1910 · Oglethorpe jail, Macon County, Georgia

John Walker, a Black man, was held in the jail at Oglethorpe, Georgia, in November 1910. According to the Alexandria Gazette, a mob took him from the jail and took the keys from the jail employee they could find. The Los Angeles Herald reported that his body was found the next morning hanging from a telegraph pole in the Flint River swamps near Montezuma, after pistol shots were heard during the night. The Oxford Eagle reported instead that the mob hanged him from an iron bridge, so the place of death is disputed between the accounts.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A mob took John Walker from the Oglethorpe jail and hanged him from a telegraph pole, but one account says the mob used an iron bridge instead, so the location is disputed.
