John Wagoner
John Wagoner was held in the jail at Ironton, Ohio, when a party of masked men, reported as numbering between 40 and 60, took him out of the jail on the night of January 19, 1882. They hanged him in the courthouse yard, according to Times-Star Ironton dispatches carried in several newspapers. The dispatches say no trace of the perpetrators had been found and that public opinion reportedly approved of the killing. None of the accounts say whether jail officers resisted the mob or gave up the keys.
