John Veasey
John Veazey, a Black man, was held at the Warrenton, Georgia jail on February 24, 1911, when a mob broke the jail doors open around midnight. The sheriff was away searching for another man, and newspaper accounts report that no resistance was offered at the jail. The mob carried John Veazey to the edge of town, hanged him from a tree and shot him many times. One report says his body went unclaimed and was sent to an Atlanta medical college, and accounts say another Black man was taken and killed the same night.
