John V. Haynes
According to his widow and daughter, John V. Haynes was a mild, quiet and honest man and a good neighbor who was loyal to his convictions, and he had been away from his family for months before he came home. He was held in a county jail in the Shenandoah Valley, and his family says soldiers came to the jail at midnight and demanded the keys from the jailer. They say the soldiers took him and another prisoner to woods about two miles away and shot both men. Local residents buried the bodies, which were later exhumed and reburied when Union forces returned to the valley.
