John Swain, 35, of Hayfork, died on January 8, 2024, while held at the Trinity County Jail in Weaverville, California. According to the Trinity County Sheriff's Office, he was found unresponsive in Dorm A during a routine inspection that morning. The sheriff's office, led by Sheriff Tim Saxon, ruled his death a suicide by self-strangulation, a claim that remains the agency's account. Medical personnel did not save him after emergency services arrived.
