John Ruthell Henry

63 years old · died June 18, 2014 · Florida State Prison, Bradford County, Florida

John Ruthell Henry, 63, was executed by lethal injection at Florida State Prison in Raiford on June 18, 2014, and the Florida governor's office said he was pronounced dead at 7:43 p.m. His attorneys argued that he was intellectually disabled and that executing him would be cruel and unusual punishment. The U.S. Supreme Court rejected a last-minute appeal for a stay, and the governor's office said the execution went ahead after that ruling. Just before the execution, he asked for forgiveness. Reporting at the time described his execution as the third since a botched execution in Oklahoma in April 2014.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. His attorneys argued that he was intellectually disabled and that his execution would be cruel and unusual punishment.

Reported by: Florida Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Florida governor's office; his attorneys.
