Died in jail or a lockup
John Rose
John Rose was held in the jail at Sealand, Washington, in April 1891. Newspaper accounts report that about forty masked men broke into the jail in the early morning, overpowered the jailer, went to the cell and shot him and another man held there, John Edwards. The mob overpowered the jailer and then dispersed quietly, according to the reports. Accounts differ on whether the killing happened on April 11 or 12, and some name Seattle rather than Sealand as the town.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Baltimore Sun news brief reprinted in the Saint Mary's Beacon (reporters); Astorian special report (reporters).
