John Rolla
John Rolla was held in the Booneville jail in Warrick County, Indiana, in December 1900, after being brought there that afternoon. That evening, according to The Age-Herald, a mob of about one hundred men came to the jail and demanded him. The deputy in charge refused to surrender the keys, and the mob broke through the wall and then the cell door, took Rolla out, and hanged him from a tree near the jail yard. The account says none of the mob wore masks and that townspeople made no effort to protect him.
