According to a 1905 Washington Times retrospective, he was held in the jail at New Albany when a mob took him from the jail and lynched him, and the account says his brothers were taken and killed the same way. The article gives no date for the killings. It describes the lynching approvingly and does not say whether jail staff resisted the mob or handed the men over.
