Died in jail or a lockup
John Redfern
John Redfern was held in the Franklin, Kentucky, jail in July 1892. Newspaper accounts report that around midnight on July 12, about fifty men came to the jail, woke the jailer, and obtained the keys. They took Redfern from his cell, carried him about two miles to Sharp's Branch, and hanged him, and his body was found there the next morning. One dispatch links the mob's action to a shooting at Redfern's house that killed P. D. Dunn, a former circuit court clerk.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
