Died in jail or a lockup
John Moses
John Moses was held in the local jail at Crystal Springs, Mississippi, under a strong guard. On the morning of June 25, 1897, a mob of two or three hundred men overpowered the guard, took him from the jail, dragged him through the streets with a rope around his neck, and hanged him from a tree near the railroad. According to the Associated Press dispatch, he was dead or nearly dead when they reached the tree. Requests for state troops to protect him were sent to Jackson, but the governor and lieutenant governor were away from the Capitol, and the troops could not move until after the hanging.
