John Middleton, 54, was executed by lethal injection with pentobarbital in Bonne Terre, Missouri, on the night of July 16, 2014. In his final statement he said officials were executing an innocent man and maintained that someone else was responsible for the crime. Court appeals raising his claims of innocence had been turned away, and a federal stay was overturned on appeal before the execution, while state officials, including the governor, said the case had reached its conclusion.
