John Martin
Martin was held in the Danbury jail in February 1886, when a party from Virginia came with papers to take him to the Rockingham jail. According to the Danbury Reporter, which relied on Rhodes, the officer left in charge of Martin, about fifteen or twenty masked men seized him on the road, carried him to the Virginia line and hanged him. Rhodes returned to Danbury afterward, and his telling is the basis for the account of the seizure.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Danbury Reporter, citing Rhodes, the officer left in charge of the prisoner, says about fifteen or twenty masked men seized Martin on the road from Danbury, carried him to the Virginia line and hanged him.
Reported by: The Danbury Reporter (reporters); Rhodes, the officer left in charge of the prisoner (the agency that held him).
