John Hill Clark
John Hill Clark was held at the county jail in Cartersville, Georgia. Around 1 a.m. on October 1, 1930, a motorcade of about 50 masked men took him from the jail, and one paper reported that he was taken from three deputies on duty and hanged from a crossbeam of a telephone pole at the fairgrounds about a mile away. Another paper put the crowd at 45 or more men traveling in automobiles and said police found his body hanging from a telephone pole several hours later. Authorities said he died of strangulation and that the body bore no other marks of violence. An earlier attempt to take him two weeks before had led to his being moved to the Fulton County jail for safekeeping.
