John Henderson

died March 12, 1901 · Navarro County Jail, Navarro County, Texas

John Henderson, a Black man, was held in custody in Corsicana, Navarro County, Texas, in March 1901. The Pine Bluff Daily Graphic and the Courier-Journal report that a crowd, put at about 2,000 by the Graphic and at about forty men by the Courier-Journal, rushed from the jail across to the courthouse grounds and took him. The San Antonio Daily Light and the El Paso Daily Herald say the officers were powerless to protect him, and the Herald reports that troops ordered out by the governor arrived too late. According to the Graphic, the mob chained him to an iron rail, poured oil on him and set him on fire, and he died after about ten minutes.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took him from deputy sheriffs and burned him at Corsicana, according to The Herald's dispatch and the acting coroner's inquest.

Reported by: The Herald (special dispatch from Corsicana) (reporters); Justice of the Peace and acting coroner H. G. Robertson (medical examiner or coroner).
