Died in jail or a lockup
John Heith
John Heith was held in the jail at Tombstone, Arizona Territory, in February 1884. Early on February 22, a mob of more than a hundred men entered the jail, took him out and hanged him from a telegraph pole, according to a special dispatch from Tombstone. That dispatch says his body remained hanging until the afternoon. The dispatch also reports that before he was hanged, he asked that his body not be shot after death. None of the reports say whether jail staff resisted the mob or handed over the keys, or how the mob got in.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody
