John Evans
John Evans and his father Monroe were held under guard at a neighbor's house in Alabama after a local justice of the peace declined to try them and bound them over without bail. According to a dispatch in the Ape-Herald, a crowd took them from the house around midnight on August 15, 1891, and hanged them from a tree. The guard was reported to have fled, believing the crowd were the prisoners' friends coming to rescue them. A second report from the same week, in The Record-Union, says a crowd took John Evans and his father from their guard and lynched them.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A crowd took John Evans and his father from a guard at a neighbor's house in Cullman, Alabama, and hanged them from a tree, according to the Ape-Herald dispatch.
