John Evans
John Evans and his father Monroe were held under guard at a neighbor's house in Alabama after a local justice of the peace bound them over without bail. According to a special dispatch from Cullman, about midnight on August 15, 1891, a crowd took the two men from the house and hanged them from a tree. The guard said he fled, believing the crowd were friends of the two men coming to rescue them. Other 1891 newspapers reported that a mob took the two men from a jail and lynched them.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Accounts say a mob took John Evans and his father from custody and hanged them; one account says the guard fled, believing the crowd were the prisoners' friends.
