A Black man held in a North Carolina jail near Windsor was taken from custody and killed by a mob on April 15, 1883, according to a Daily Evening Bulletin report published the next day. The report says two of the masked men, with a member of their group bound as a prisoner, deceived the jailer into handing over the keys, and the group then took the man from the jail. Because the printed text is garbled, his first name is uncertain, and the paper's account of why he was held is not repeated here.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Two masked men deceived the jailer, obtained the keys and took the man from the jail, according to the report.
