Executed
John Childers
John Childers was hanged at Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 1872. According to George B. Maledon, who recalled his work as the executioner, Childers was taken from the jail to the gallows. Maledon said a storm came up, with a flash of lightning and thunder, just as the trap was sprung. The account comes from Maledon's recollection, published in The Middleburgh Post in 1887, some fifteen years after the hanging.
