Died in jail or a lockup
John Brown
John Brown, a Black man, was held in a jail in Navasota, Texas, according to a 1890 newspaper account. On August 5, 1890, a crowd of citizens took him from the jail, hanged him from a tree and shot him. The newspaper account reports that the mob took him from the jail, but it does not say whether the jailer or sheriff resisted, gave up the keys, or handed him over. The paper's text is damaged in places, so the exact location is uncertain.
