John Brown
John Brown was led from the jail in a procession to a gallows, with troops and a sheriff accompanying him. J. T. L. Preston, an eyewitness whose account was printed in the Caldwell Tribune on August 18, 1888, wrote that Brown climbed the scaffold without assistance, made no speech, and showed no timidity, with a calm and composed voice. Preston also recalled that Brown, though he stood steady, was afraid of falling when he stepped forward on the platform. Preston described him standing blindfolded with a noose around his neck for about ten minutes while the troops were positioned.
