John Branham

died May 31, 1872 · Owenton jail, Owen County, Kentucky

John Branham was held in the Owenton jail in Kentucky, and a dispatch from Sparta reprinted in the Memphis Daily Appeal says about one hundred men came to the jail around one in the morning. The jailer reportedly handed over the keys, though reluctantly, and the men took Branham out, carried him about half a mile from town and hanged him from a tree. The account says his wife had been buried the previous Wednesday and that two children were left behind. Town authorities said they had no advance knowledge of the crowd, and the account is a single newspaper dispatch.
