John Billy

died 1873 · Sebastian County, Arkansas

John Billy, a Choctaw man, was hanged at Fort Smith, Arkansas, in 1873 according to the executioner George Maledon's recollection, which placed it probably in the same year as John Childers. Maledon said that before his execution Billy was so distressed that he had to be chained to a post in a room above the courthouse, and that Billy begged him to shoot him instead. A 1887 account citing the hangman's recollection said Billy met his death composed and stoical. The date rests on recollection years later, so it is approximate.
