John A. Jessrang
John A. Jessrang, also given as Jessrane, was held in the Beaver Head County jail at Glendale, Montana Territory. One account says he made no complaint and showed no sign of pain, and his father had lived in St. Paul for several years, where he was well known. In February or early March 1883, a group of masked, armed men overpowered the jailer, took the keys, went to his cell, pulled him from his bed with a rope while his hands were shackled, and hanged him. He was buried the next day, with about half a dozen citizens following his body to the grave.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The St. Paul Herald reported that a masked mob overpowered the jailer, took the keys, and hanged him in his cell.
