Joel Barrett, 29, died at the Eddy County Detention Center in New Mexico on October 9, 2025, hours after he was booked into the jail. Warden Billy Massingill said Barrett had a medical emergency and was pronounced dead at the jail, but did not give a cause of death or the time it occurred. The warden said the jail's nurse examined all people at booking and that Barrett showed no behavior calling for further evaluation.
