Joe McNeeley
Joe McNeeley was being held in the jail in Charlotte, North Carolina, under police guard when, on August 26, 1913, a mob broke in, took him from the jail and shot him to death. The New Haven Union reported that he was shot by the mob, and the Norwich Bulletin reported the same, but neither account says whether the officers guarding him resisted or gave up the keys. The New Haven Union also reported a $1,000 reward offered for the people who killed him. The accounts describe the reason he was held in terms of an accusation against him, which this memorial does not repeat.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
