Joe Fulford

died August 11, 1883 · Miller County Jail, Miller County, Georgia

Joe Fulford, a farmer in Miller County, Georgia, was held in the Miller County jail in August 1883. According to a telegram from Atlanta reported in the Daily Dispatch, a mob took him from the jail at night, hanged him from a nearby timber and shot his body. An Albany newspaper placed the killing on a Saturday night, about August 11, at Spring Creek, but its Bainbridge correspondent first denied that a lynching had happened, and the paper said it could not decide which account was true. None of these accounts says whether jail officers or the sheriff resisted the mob, gave up keys, or handed him over.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). An Albany newspaper account says a mob took Fulford from the Spring Creek jail and killed him, while the Bainbridge correspondent first denied a lynching, and an Atlanta telegram says a mob hanged him from a timber near the Miller County jail and shot his body.
