Joe Dixon
Joe Dixon was a pastry cook who had lived in Ouray for a number of years and worked at all the hotels in town. He was held in the Ouray city jail on September 11, 1877. That evening a masked crowd came to the sheriff's house demanding the jail keys, and the sheriff said he did not have them. The crowd surrounded the jail, and about an hour later smoke and flames came out of it; Dixon was pulled out dead from smoke inhalation.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined. The Solid Muldoon reported he was pulled dead of smoke inhalation from the jail after smoke and flames came out of it, and gave no cause for the fire.
