Joe Boxly
Joe Boxly, a 19-year-old Black man, was held in a county jail near Aloma, Tennessee. Early on the morning of May 29, 1929, a mob of nearly 100 men entered the jail, took him out and hanged him from a tree about four miles from town, where a card nearby asked that his body be left hanging. The Richmond Planet reported that Crockett County Sheriff Carl Emison had left the jail keys under a divan in his home, where the mob found them and took custody of him. The same paper said the county coroner later removed his body from the tree and turned it over to his relatives. Accounts differ on the date and the place of the killing.
