Joe Barce
Joe Barco was held in the Camden County jail at Camden Court House, North Carolina, when, according to a special telegram to the Richmond Dispatch, a mob of 500 or 600 men took him from the jail on Saturday night, October 1, 1892. The telegram reports that they hanged him and shot him many times. Other newspaper accounts put the crowd at about 500, or about fifty, and one places the killing at Edenton rather than at the jail. None of the reports say whether jail officers or the sheriff resisted the mob or handed Joe Barco over.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob of several hundred men took Joe Barco from the Camden County jail, hanged him and shot him many times, according to newspaper dispatches from Edenton and Raleigh.
