Jimmy Lee Calloway
Jimmy Lee Calloway, 47, of Conway, South Carolina, died in August 2017 at Conway Medical Center after being held at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center in Horry County. According to WPDE, an officer found him unresponsive in his cell before he was taken to the hospital. The coroner's office said the death appeared to be from medical causes, pending an autopsy, and SLED and the Horry County Sheriff's Office opened investigations. A later lawsuit filed by his estate representative, Eloise Calloway, says intake screening and required medical examinations were not properly done and that his worsening condition went unaddressed in the days before he was found, and it says his death was ruled end stage pulmonary emphysema caused by cardiovascular disease. The family disputes that the care he received was adequate, and the county and sheriff's office had not responded to the lawsuit when it was reported.
