Jim Wilson
Jim Wilson was held in the Denton jail in Maryland in November 1862. According to the Delaware State Journal and Statesman, a crowd from the surrounding country broke into the jail, took him out, and hanged him from a tree. The Alexandria Gazette reports that the crowd fired sixteen bullets into his body and dragged it through the streets before burning it. A coroner's jury that viewed the remains returned a verdict of death by violence at the hand of a mob. None of these accounts says whether jail officers resisted or handed him over.
