Died in jail or a lockup
Jim Stineback
Jim Stineback, a Black man, was one of three brothers held in the Tiptonville jail in Lake County, Tennessee. According to The Montgomery Advertiser, a mob took the three men from the jail on the night of November 24, 1908, and hanged them from a scaffold inside a Black church. The Hartford Republican dates the killing to November 25 and says the men were placed in a wagon first, and that the governor had telegraphed the sheriff to prevent the lynching. The accounts differ on the date, and the sheriff's conduct during the mob's approach is given in different terms.
