Jim Rhodes
Jim Rhodes was held in the jail at Charlottesville, Virginia, in October 1882. Overnight between October 1 and 2, reports say about forty armed men took him from the jail after the jailer surrendered his keys and the guards were overpowered, then carried him about half a mile and hanged him from a tree. Citizens near the scene said Rhodes asked for more time to make a confession before he was hanged, and that guards held back a crowd that came running. The Commonwealth's attorney tried to stop the mob and was ordered to stand aside, and a special grand jury was summoned to investigate the lynching.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. Armed men took Jim Rhodes from the Charlottesville jail and hanged him from a tree, according to the Associated Press and Richmond dispatches, and citizens near the scene said he asked for more time to make a confession.
