Executed
Jim Lyles
Jim Lyles was hanged at Danville, Virginia, on January 22, 1892, in an execution carried out under state authority. According to a Richmond newspaper, he was nervous before his death, asked for a cigar and smoked it with evident enjoyment. Another paper reported that he slept, ate a hearty breakfast, and was led to the scaffold at 11 o'clock, and that ministers prayed with him before the drop fell at 11:33. The Richmond account said the execution was private and that the two condemned people sang a hymn as the drop fell.
