Jim Green
Greene was one of two men held in the Hastings, Nebraska, jail when a mob came for them on the night of April 3, 1883. A dispatch from Hastings printed on April 5 says about thirty-five masked men took him from the jail and hanged him. A Kansas paper printed on April 12 reports that the mob broke down the jail door, that Sheriff Hutchinson refused to give up the prisoners and was seized, and that the men were bound and gagged before being hanged from a railroad bridge. That account comes from a partly garbled page, so its details are uncertain.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A dispatch datelined Hastings, reprinted in the Weekly Kansas Chief, says a mob of about thirty-five masked men took Greene from the Hastings jail and hanged him; the account does not say whether jail staff resisted.
